Im very proud of the guys on this team, St. Johns Head Coach Ed Blankmeyer said. They worked very hard during the first semester. Weve had a strong history of success in this program and I want to see that continue, both on the field and off of it.
Three student-athletes posted a perfect 4.0, including junior pitchers Vinnie Mannese (Marlboro, N.Y./Marlboro) and Henry Varum (Newark, N.J./Essex Catholic), who are studying communications and education, respectively. Joining them was freshman pitcher Jeff Ford (Hamden, Conn./Notre Dame), a computer science major.
Junior centerifelder Charlie Bilezikjian (Staten Island, N.Y./Port Richmond), who was an All-BIG EAST selection by Baseball America, posted a 3.91 grade point average and now has a cumulative GPA of 3.86 during his time at St. Johns. Bilezikjian, an education major, was a BIG EAST All-Rookie selection in 1999 and is the teams top returning batter.
Senior first baseman Chris Fallon (Bayonne, N.J./Bayonne) earned a 3.41 grade point average in communication arts. Fallon, who has a cumulative 3.22 GPA, enters his senior season tied for the all-time lead in home runs at St. Johns with 16. Also earning high honors was senior catcher Eric Potts (Little Ferry, N.J./Ridgefield Park), who finished the semester with a 3.25. Potts, a first-team All-BIG EAST selection in 1999, is a sports management major who minors in business.
The Red Storm open the season on February 17 at the College of Charleston.
