Wingert Selected to United States U-23 Touring Team

JAMAICA, N.Y. -- St. Johns University sophomore Chris Wingert (Babylon, N.Y.) was selected to the 18-man roster for the United States U-23 soccer teams tour of Europe, it was announced by head coach Glenn Myernick. The team, which will try to qualify for the 2004 Olympic Tournament (a U-23 competition) is comprised of players under the age of 21.

The United States U-23 team will be playing in Europe from February 1-14. The team will play at the Madeira International Tournament in Portugal and in a friendly in Italy.

Wingert, a second-team All-BIG EAST selection and first-team NSCAA New York region selection, led St. Johns to a 17-3-3 overall record this season and the programs second appearance in the NCAA Final Four. One of the teams tri-captains, Wingert led the Red Storm to their league record sixth BIG EAST Tournament Championship. He finished fourth on the team in scoring with six goals for 12 points. A center-back, he helped guide a Red Storm unit that posted 12 shutouts and ranked among the top defensive teams in the country.

I was a little surprised, Wingert said of the honor. I thought I held my own, but I figured it was 50-50. Its just a feeling of elation and excitementa great sense of accomplishment.

The squad named by Myernick is led by six players with MLS experience: DaMarcus Beasley (Chicago Fire), Bobby Convey (D.C. United), Kyle Beckerman (Colorado), D.J. Countess (MetroStars), Devin Barclay (San Jose) and defender Jose Burciaga (Kansas City). It also includes three Project-40 signees who will enter the 2002 MLS SuperDraft: Brad Davis (Saint Louis University), Kelly Gray (Portland) and Kyle Martino (Virginia).
