Fitzgerald (Bellerose, N.Y.) returned to the circle for the Red Storm this season after missing all of 2002 due to wrist surgery. She returned to form, posting an 18-15 record with a 1.76 ERA. Fitzgerald made 39 appearances for St. Johns, pitching 25 complete games and recording three saves. In 215.1 innings pitched, she struck out 145 and walked just 43 batters. Fitzgerald, a two-time BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week, recorded wins over national powerhouses DePaul and Fresno State en route to leading her team to a 30-28 season.
In addition to being honored by the NFCA, Sherlock (San Diego, Calif.) was also selected to the BIG EAST All-Second Team and the BIG EAST All-Rookie Team. Sherlock led St. Johns in batting this season with a .320 average and 56 hits. She drove in 27 runs and hit a team-high 13 doubles. Over the final 18 games of the year, Sherlock hit .455 with a .927 slugging percentage and seven homeruns. In BIG EAST play, Sherlock hit .339 with 20 hits and eight RBI. Sherlock is the Red Storms first rookie to garner BIG EAST All-Second Team and NFCA Region Team honors.
The Red Storm also had three players selected to All-BIG EAST Teams last week. Sherlock along with freshman Megan Oliver (Endicott, N.Y.) received BIG EAST All-Rookie Team honors. Senior Alesha Argeras (Warren, Ohio) and Sherlock were named to the BIG EAST All-Second Team.
The Red Storm will return 7 of 10 starters for the 2004 season, including Fitzgerald.
