TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - Freshman Brittany Crouch (Irvine, Calif.) tossed a complete game no-hitter to defeat Connecticut, 5-0 this morning in the first game of the 2004 Seminole Classic. Crouch went the distance striking out nine and allowing only two base runners, both reaching on St. John's errors. The Red Storm improve to 6-7 on the season, while the Huskies fall to 1-5.
Crouch, who evened her season record at 3-3, was dominant, allowing only one ball to leave the infield, which was the game's final out. Prior to that out, she had struck out five in a row and ended up retiring the last 10 batters she faced.
St. John's broke through first, taking a 2-0 lead in the top of the second inning. Freshman Christina Tucker (San Diego, Calif.) led off the inning with a double over the centerfielder's head, but was retired at third on a fielder's choice by junior Jillian Sandoval (Orange, Calif.). Freshman Loren Anguiano (Mesa, Ariz.) would follow with a walk, placing runners at first and second. After the inning's second out, sophomore Jessica Marical (Stanton, Calif.) lined a single through the middle, scoring Sandoval. Next batter, sophomore Megan Oliver (Endicott, N.Y.) bounced a ground ball to the second baseman, who booted it, allowing Oliver to reach and Anguiano to score from second to give the Red Storm a 2-0 advantage.
The Red Storm added another run in the top of the third inning to widen the lead to 3-0. Junior Allina Sainz (San Diego, Calif.) reached first on a one-out walk and remained at first with two outs. Sandoval would drive a double over the head of the left fielder, scoring Sainz all the way from first.
St. John's added to their lead in the top of the fifth, adding two runs and taking a 5-0 lead. With one out, Sherlock lined a single into right field and was followed by an infield single by Sainz. On the play, the throw by the shortstop went into the St. John's dugout, allowing Sherlock and Sainz to move up to second and third. Tucker would walk, loading the bases for Sandoval with only one out. Sandoval lined a ball through the middle to score Sherlock and Sainz, giving the Red Storm a 5-0 lead. However, St. John's would leave Tucker and Sandoval stranded at second and third after a pass ball.
The Red Storm will return to the field this afternoon at 1:30 p.m. as they take on the University of Rhode Island in their second game of the 2004 Seminole Challenge.
