Queens, NY - The Red Storm volleyball team (13-3, BIG EAST 0-0) will face New York City rival the Fordham Rams (10-4, A-10 0-0) in its last non-conference game of the 2005 season on Tuesday, September 20 at Carnesecca Arena. St. John's comes into Tuesday night's game on a seven game winning streak and after winning the Bucknell Invitational this past weekend. Meanwhile, Fordham hosted its annual Rose Hill Tournament last weekend and finished second behind Maryland (1-2).
LAST TIME OUT: Tuesday marks the twelfth match-up between the St. John's and Fordham. St. John's leads the series 10-1. The last meeting between the two teams was in September 2004 at the Rose Hill Gym in Bronx, NY. The Red Storm finished the match 3-1. The Rams took the first game 30-24 but the Red Storm came back taking the remaining three games 30-28, 30-25. 31-29. Lisa Tedder (Coos Bay, OR) made 59 assists in what was her first game for the Red Storm. LaToya Blunt (Vacaville, CA), also playing in her first match for the Red Storm, was second the on the team in kills for the match with 15. Hitting a match-high 42 percent for St. John's was then freshman Caitlin Rimgaila (Trooper, PA) with 10 kills.
STORMWATCH: St. John's is off to a solid start heading into is last game before BIG EAST play with a 13-3 record. Shameka Mitchell (Lakeland, FL), a middle blocker, continues to lead St. John's with 3.58 kills per game. Mitchell has been named to two All-Tournament teams this season (Crusader Classic and Bucknell Invitational), was named Most Valuable Player of the Bucknell Invitational and was named to the BIG EAST honor roll. Setter Tedder is first on the team in assists with an average 7.90 per game (411). Senior Anicia Wood (Wotton Terrace, Barbados) and freshman libero Kathleen Yee (Honolulu, HI) control the Red Storm's defense with 46 blocks and 211 digs, respectively.
In its last game, St. John's defeated weekend tournament host, Bucknell University, 3-0. Blunt hit 32 percent, leading the Red Storm with 15 kills. Tedder added another 47 assists to her career record.
SCOUTING THE RAMS: Fordham returns 13 letterwinners, five of which were starters. Jamee Stimson, a junior outside hitter, was the first Ram to earn All-Atlantic 10 honors since the Rams joined the conference in the 1995-96 season. She led her team last season in kills (276), kills per game (9.86), service aces (35) and service aces per game (1.25). In 2004, libero Stephanie Frost led the Rams in digs with 363 (12.1 digs per game). Kealia Ieremia, a junior setter, was first on the team in assists with 33.1 per game (992).
In its last game, Fordham fell 0-3 to the Maryland Terrapins. Stimson led the Rams hitting .438 and Ieremia added 32 assists. Fordham tallied five more service aces than Maryland (7-2), while Maryland out hit the Fordham .264 to .096.
ON DECK FOR ST. JOHN'S: The Red Storm begins this weekend's action at BIG EAST newcomer University of Cincinnati on Friday, September 23. First service against the Bearcats is at 7:30 p.m. in Fifth Third Arena in Cincinnati, OH. St. John's second game of the weekend is against another BIG EAST first, University of Louisville on Sunday, September 25. Game time against the Cardinals is 2 p.m. at Cardinal Arena in Louisville, KY.
