St. John??' Volleyball Defeats Connecticut 3-0

The St. John???s volleyball team defeated BIG EAST rival Connecticut 3-0 (30-25, 30-27, 30-24) Saturday afternoon in Storrs, Conn. The Red Storm improved to 21-1 on the season and remains undefeated in conference play with a 6-0 record. The Huskies drop to 2-4 in BIG EAST action, and are 13-8 overall.
The Red Storm was led by sophomore Hui Ping Huang (The People???s Republic of China) who posted a double-double with a match-high 15 kills and 10 digs. Senior outside hitter Patti Hardimon (Honolulu, Hawaii) chipped in with 13 kills and 13 digs, for her ninth double-double of the season, while junior Latoya Blunt (Vacaville, Calif.) recorded 11 kills and a match-high .550 hitting percentage.
Connecticut earned the first point of game one, but Huang tied it up quickly for St. John???s and helped the Red Storm take a 3-1 lead over the Huskies. Service aces from Wioleta Leszczynska (Bielsko-Biala, Poland) aided St. John???s lead, but Connecticut took advantage of a couple of errors to tie the score, 8-8. The two teams battled point-for-point until two successful attacks from Huang gave St. John???s a four point advantage. The Red Storm continued to push ahead on points from Blunt, Hardimon and Caitlin Rimgaila (Trooper, Pa.). A Huang kill ended the first game, 30-25.
The Huskies opened the second game with a 5-1 run on kills from Devon Farrell. Connecticut continued to control the scoreboard will points from Sade Chambers and Farrell, and aces from Jessica Issac. The Huskies held a five-point lead over the Red Storm, but St. John???s rallied back on attacks from Blunt, Huang and Hardimon to tie the score at 16-16. The Red Storm would tie the score three more times before grabbing the advantage with kills from Blunt, Leszczynska and Hardimon. Rimgaila slammed the ball down to find game two, 30-27.
St. John???s and Connecticut went head-to-head throughout most of game three, knotting the score eight times. The Red Storm tied it up, 17-17, while on a 5-1 run off of kills from Hardimon and Rimgaila. Kate Seabaugh and Farrell brought the score within one, 20-19, but that was the closest the Huskies would get for the remainder of the match. Huang and Blunt gave St. John???s its last jolt, 29-23, and Dana DeMayo (Ra???anana, Israel) closed out the game, 30-24.
Freshman outside hitter Farrell had a team-best 12 kills and 13 digs, while setter Bridget Denson-Dorman dished out a match-high 43 assists. Libero Issac recorded a match-high 21 digs.
The Red Storm returns to action on Friday, Oct. 20, against the Blue Demons of DePaul. First serve is schedule for 7 p.m. CST, in McGrath Arena.
