QUEENS, N.Y. - Kia Wright scored 19 points and seven different players scored at least seven points as the St. John's women's basketball team defeated Louisville, 79-63, Wednesday night in Carnesecca Arena. Wright led the team effort, while Danielle Chambers grabbed 14 rebounds and Angela Clark scored 13 points for the Red Storm, which won its ninth BIG EAST Conference game of the year.
With the win, St. John's improved to 19-5 overall and 9-4 in the BIG EAST and solidified its third-place standing in the league behind only Rutgers and Connecticut. The loss dropped Louisville to 16-7 overall, 7-5 in conference play.
The Cardinals jumped out to a 21-12 lead at the 10-minute mark in the first half, but the Red Storm fought back and tied the game at 26 on a 3-pointer by Tiina Sten with 6:09 left in the half.
From there, St. John's went on a 19-10 run to end the half and take a 45-36 lead. Freshman Monique McLean keyed the Red Storm's comeback, as the guard drained two 3-pointers en route to 12 first-half points.
St. John's opened the second half on a 15-4 run to take its largest lead of the game at 60-40 with 15:10 left to play on a 3-pointer by Wright.
St. John's maintained its composure down the stretch and Louisville did not get closer than 14 points for the remainder of the game.
Wright was 7-for-13 on the night and also added eight rebounds, four assists and three steals.
Chambers, meanwhile, netted seven points and had a game-high 14 rebounds. Fellow forward Clark had six boards to go with 13 points.
McLean scored 12 points, all in the first half, while the solid play of senior guards Tara Walker and Greeba Barlow continued as they both chipped in nine points.
Sten, who hit two 3-pointers, finished with eight points.
The Red Storm is back in action when it travels to nationally ranked DePaul for a Saturday game. Tip off is 8 p.m. (ET).
NOTEWORTHY: Kia Wright's 19-point outing was her fifth-straight double digit effort and 21st this year ... it was Danielle Chambers' ninth double-digit rebounding game of the year and first since a 13-rebound performance on Jan. 21 against Villanova ... the senior barely missed posting her fifth double-double of the year with 14 boards and seven points ... Angela Clark moved up a spot in St. John's all-time scoring list ... her 13-point effort gives her 1,055 for her career and she is now 18 points shy of 10th place (Latasha Thompson; 1,073 points) ... St. John's improved to 10-1 at home this year.
