QUEENS, N.Y. - Thanks to a 2-1 record in its opening week of play, the St. John's women's basketball team is currently receiving votes in the Associated Press Top 25 Poll, released on Tuesday.
A solid win over then-No. 24-ranked NC State, 60-55, on Saturday afternoon at the TD Banknorth Classic in Burlington Vt., keyed the Red Storm's inclusion among the vote-getting teams. With the win the team went on to play Vermont in the championship game. St. John's opened up the 2007-08 campaign on the road at Army and came out with the decisive 72-58 victory on Nov. 13.
Junior guard Monique McLean has stepped up for the Red Storm in the absence of injured all-conference player Kia Wright. McLean, who was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll on Nov. 19, has led the team in points and rebounds in every game, averaging 16.3 points and 9.3 boards. Wright, who has been sidelined with an injury since the start of the season, returned to full practice this week.
Opening up with three games on the road, the Red Storm will return to Carnesecca Arena for its home opener against Dartmouth on Sunday at 2 p.m. There will be live streaming video and audio of the game on RedStormSports.com. The cost for the service is either $9.95 per month or $79.95 for the year.
