Women's Soccer Heads To UB Classic

The St. John's women's soccer team, currently receiving votes in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll and one of four unbeaten teams in the BIG EAST, takes its four-game season-opening win streak on the road to the University of Buffalo Classic this weekend. The Red Storm faces Vermont on Friday at 4 p.m., then Maine on Sunday at 10:30 a.m.
Weekend Storylines
• St. John's continued its hot start to the season with wins over Sacred Heart and Miami (Ohio) last weekend. The Red Storm scored the golden goal to defeat the Pioneers with a second left on the scoreboard in the first overtime period on Friday, Sept. 7, then followed up that performance with a 2-1 victory over the RedHawks on Sunday, Sept. 9.
• For the second week in a row, a Red Storm women's soccer player earned weekly conference honors from the BIG EAST. Freshman Raelynne Lee, who scored the game-winning goal in the win over Miami (Ohio), was named Rookie of the Week on Sept. 10.
• Krystle Jalalian, who was named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week after the opening weekend of play, continues to lead the league in points with eight (three goals, two assists). The senior forward got her first start of the year against Miami (Ohio) on Sunday.
• The last time a Red Storm team started the season 4-0 was 2004 under 14th-year and reigning BIG EAST Coach of the Year Ian Stone.
• This will be the first meeting between St. John's and Vermont in women's soccer. The Red Storm leads the all-time series with Maine, 1-0-0. The sole matchup took place on Sept. 5, 1999, and was a 4-1 St. John's victory.
In The Rankings
• For the first time in school history, St. John's is receiving votes in the NSCAA/adidas Top 25 poll, released Sept. 11, 2007.
• The Red Storm is ranked program-best third in the Northeast Region by the NSCAA and fifth in the region by Soccer Buzz Magazine.
Weekly Honors For Jalalian, Lee
• After totaling three goals during all of 2006, Jalalian exploded offensively in the first weekend of 2007, scoring three goals and adding an assist. The senior forward was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week along with Big Apple Soccer.com's Player of the Week on Sept. 3. A week later, Lee was named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week (Sept. 10).
Statistically Speaking
• The Red Storm put up impressive numbers in its first four wins of the season and leads the BIG EAST in points (30), goals (11) and goals per game (2.75).
• Individually, Jalalian leads the league in points (8) and points per game (2.0). She is ranked second in goals (3) and goals per game (0.75).
Pasciolla's Game-Winner Selected As Goal Of The Week By Big Apple Soccer.com
• St. John's sophomore midfielder Nicole Pasciolla, who scored her first goal of the season just before time expired in the first overtime period in a 2-1 win over Sacred Heart on Sept. 7, was named the winner of the BigAppleSoccer.com women's college goal of the week for the week ending Sunday, Sept. 9.
A Look At Vermont
• The Catamounts have a 1-2-1 record on the year. Gabby Bonfigli leads the team with three points (1g, 1a).
• Eliza Bradley has started all four games in goal for Vermont, has allowed seven goals and has 42 saves (10.5 per game).
A Look At Maine
• Maine has a record of 0-3-1. Hailey Blackburn (1g) and Kim Stephenson (1a) have registered points.
