Masur Named NSCAA Northeast Region Coach Of The Year

QUEENS, N.Y. - Head men's soccer coach Dr. Dave Masur has been named the Northeast Region Coach of the Year as announced by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA). This is the sixth time that Masur has earned the regional honor from the NSCAA (1991, 1993, 1996, 2001, 2003 and 2008).
"This is a great honor for not only me, but my assistants and the players as well," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "This award is a reflection of the season we had and of all the hard work put in by our players and our coaching staff."
The 2008 BIG EAST Coach of the Year, Masur guided St. John's to the College Cup for the fourth time. The Red Storm also earned the BIG EAST Red Division regular season championship crown and finished with a 19-3-3 record. The 19 wins are the second-most in program history.
St. John's, ranked No. 4 in the NSCAA final postseason rankings, led the nation with a new school-record 16 shutouts. On the season, the Red Storm outscored opponents 39-13 and posted a 0.50 goals against average.
Junior defender Joel Gustafsson was named a second-team All-American, while Gustafsson, Nelson Becerra and Tadeu Terra earned all-region honors. Senior keeper Neal Kitson was also named a Soccer America MVP. The Red Storm took home BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year honors (Becerra), Defensive Player of the Year honors (Gustafsson) and had a total of six players earn all-conference recognition
As Northeast Regional Coach of the Year, Masur is a finalist for NSCAA National Coach of the Year honors.
