Velardo Takes Sixth At The Palmas Del Mar Invitational

HUMACAO, Puerto Rico - The St. John's men's golf team (29-over 893) finished tied for sixth place at its host tournament, the Palmas Del Mar Invitational, which is held at the par 72, 6,931 yard Flamboyan G.C. Senior Kevin Velardo led the with a top-10 finish, and took sixth overall with an even-par, 216.
"The Palmas del Mar Intercollegiate was well received by all the teams and everyone enjoyed the outstanding facilities, golf course and Caribbean hospitality," said head coach Frank Darby. "Kevin [Velardo] played great for us and VCU really played well to win. Evan [Beirne] missed the event as he is recuperating from foot surgery last month. We hope to have him back by the end of the month."
Velardo was solid for the Red Storm in the three day tournament, as he posted scores of 73, 71 and 72. Junior co-captain Mike Ballo Jr. chipped in with a top-20 finish, taking 18th overall. Ballo scored rounds of 75, 71 and 77.
Senior Casey Calmi finished 26th with a 10-over 226 (72, 77, 77). Sophomore transfers Mark Costanza and John Kahlden rounded out the Red Storm starting five for the tournament. Costanza finished tied for 35th with a 13-over 229 and Kahlden tied for 41st with a 16-over 232.
St. John's men's golf is back in action on March 20-21 when the team competes in the Linger-Longer Tournament in Greensboro, Ga.
