QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's men's golf alumni Greg Bisconti, Keegan Bradley, Mike Diffley, Mark Mielke, Mike Meehan and Andrew Svoboda are all just 36 holes away from the 2009 U.S. Open which will be held locally, at Bethpage. The six golfers will compete at a sectional qualifier next month.
"I am very excited for Keegan and all of our alumni," said head coach Frank Darby. "This shows the level of talent that comes from St. John's and our ability to develop great players through the program."
Svoboda was exempt from the local qualifier because he made the cut at last year's Open, while the other five golfers advanced in a local stage of the U.S. Open qualifier. The alumni will now compete in a 36-hole, two-round event in Purchase, N.Y. on June 8, for a shot at the U.S. Open.
Mielke, from East Norwich, N.Y., carded a 69, Diffley from Pelham Manor, N.Y., carded a 70 and Bradley, golfing out of Orlando, Fla., and Meehan from Locust Valley, N.Y., both tallied 71's at the Cherry Valley Club in Garden City, N.Y., on May 13. Bisconti, from South Salem, N.Y., scored at 70 at the Siwanoy Country Club in Bronxville, N.Y. on May 19.
Sectional qualifying rounds will be held on May 25 and June 8 with results posted to http://USGA.USOpen.com.
The 2009 U.S. Open will be held at the Black Course at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, N.Y. on June 15-21.
