Pregame Quotes: St. John's vs. Fordham

Dec. 6, 2013

Sophomore Center Chris Obekpa:

On the rivalry with Fordham:

"St. John's is New York's team and it is a privilege for me to be on the team. They want that too and they are mad that they are not here. Playing us is their opportunity to prove a point."

On St. John's slow starts to game:

"We've been working on that. We have to stop that because as the year goes on we will play tougher teams and we don't want to dig ourselves to deep where can't come back. We can't do that against Georgetown, Syracuse and the tougher teams like that."

On St. John's size advantage:

"We are a bigger team, so we have to take advantage of it offensively and defensively. I think it's a good chance for us to beat them on the boards and use our size against them."

Junior Forward Sir'Dominic Pointer

On telling Rysheed Jordan what it's like to play at Madison Square Garden:

"I told him earlier that it is an amazing experience. You're going to be hyped for the game. I remember my freshman year, just walking into The Garden seeing everybody that played there. It's a very exciting place and he is going to feel the hype walking in there."

On rivalry against Fordham and other New York teams:

"We are big rivals. They come here and play hard, so they can have bragging rights about who is New York's team. That's our job to keep winning games to let everyone know that we are New York's team."

Junior Guard Phil Greene IV

On playing Fordham:

"Every time we play Fordham it's a good game, competitive, a lot of energy. It's going to be a dog fight and we're up to the challenge."

On playing against other New York teams:

"Any inner-city New York team will want to beat us. They're going to come with their best shot, they're going to bring their A-game, and they're going to play with a lot of passion. We just have to match it. I think tomorrow, again, it will be a good but I think we'll come out on top."

On Rysheed Jordan playing at Madison Square Garden:

"I told him that once he gets there he's going to be energetic, hype, he's not going to get tired, he'll be jumping all around cause MSG is just a different feel. And he'll see it soon enough."

On preparing for a "guard-heavy" Fordham team:

"Just be up for the challenge, I think they start four guards so it's just about guarding. We have to take it personal; we can't let them get off. We have to get stops and run-outs, that's how we fuel our offense. So if we get stops and shut them down it will be a fun game."

On playing from behind and how to change that:

"Be ready and be prepared. Not coming out lackadaisical. We have to bring the fight; we have to throw the first punch."
