COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The St. John's men's soccer team used a pair of second-half goals to conclude exhibition action with a 2-0 victory against preseason No. 2 Maryland, a squad also selected as preseason ACC favorites.
"Maryland has a fantastic program and is in the hunt for a National Championship every year," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "Earning a great result on the road is a nice way to finish our preseason schedule."
Danny Bedoya scored the eventual game-winner on a direct free kick from the top of the box in the 64th minute to give the Red Storm a 1-0 lead. Adrian L'Esperance notched his second goal in as many exhibition games with a one-time blast into the upper right corner on an assist from Jamie Thomas in the 86th minute.
Rafael Diaz played the full 90 minutes in goal to post the shutout for St. John's, which did not allow a goal in 195:00 preseason minutes.
"We played well in the first half and created some nice chances, but I think we played with more discipline and had better attacking play as part of a more complete second half," added Masur.
St. John's posted a 15-10 advantage in shots, including a 10-6 edge as part of the two-goal second half. Both teams finished with four corner kicks.
St. John's opens the 2013 season under the lights at Belson Stadium with an 8 p.m. game against NJIT on Aug. 30. The 18-game regular season schedule includes two of the past four NCAA National Champions and a total of seven teams that participated in the 2012 NCAA Tournament.
