QUEENS, N.Y. - Following a pair of dominant performances in the RV/19 Red Storm's 3-0 win over Seton Hall on Sunday night, Georgia Kearney-Perry and Rachel Daly have been recognized by the conference for their outstanding individual achievements. Kearney-Perry was named the BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week, while Daly earned a spot on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, it was announced this morning by the league office.
The player of the week award marks the first of the campaign for Kearney-Perry, the reigning BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year and the league's Preseason Defensive Player of the Year this season. For the second time in three outings, the redshirt senior from Tring, England, led a defensive unit that kept its opponent from registering a shot on goal, as none of the Pirates' three chances found their target on Sunday. In addition to her organizational duties as one of the team's four captains, Kearney-Perry also made her fair share of exceptional individual efforts on the defensive side of the pitch against the Pirates.
For the season, Kearney-Perry has played all but five minutes for the Red Storm, commanding a back four that has helped produce seven clean sheets in nine total wins and is allowing just 3.1 opposing shots on goal per game. She was honored once before this season by the conference, earning a place on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Aug. 31.
Daly, a two-time BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week so far this season, makes her second appearance on the conference's honor roll following a world class outing against the Pirates on Sunday night. The Harrogate, England, native kicked off the scoring in the 26th minute, converting on a diving header off a cross from Morgan Tinari to give St. John's the early lead. In the 60th minute, Daly showed why she is one of the most feared strikers in the college game, booting a left-footed goal from the top of the 18 that nestled perfectly between the cross bar and the outstretched hand of the Seton Hall keeper.
With her two goals against the Pirates, Daly now has 40 for her career, tying her with Adriana Viola for the top spot on the St. John's career list. The four-point performance also marked Daly's third straight multi-goal outing, tying the longest such streak of her illustrious career.
Kearney-Perry and Daly, who have helped the Red Storm achieve its best record through 10 games in program history (9-1-0), return to action on Thursday night, as St. John's travels to Butler for a 7 p.m. match against the Bulldogs.
