OMAHA, Neb. - The St. John's men's basketball team suffered a 100-59 setback to Creighton (18-11, 9-7) Sunday at CenturyLink Center Omaha. Geoffrey Groselle led the Bluejays with a double-double, going for 22 points and 11 rebounds. James Milliken scored 19 points and drained four 3-pointers as Creighton snapped a two-game slide.
Christian Jones (Arlington, Texas) led the Red Storm with a career-high 17 points off the bench. The junior forward shot 8-for-12 from the field, grabbed four rebounds and added four steals. Yankuba Sima (Giorona, Spain) finished with 13 points and four rebounds, while Durand Johnson (Baltimore, Md.) added eight points, six rebounds and four assists for St. John's (8-22, 1-16)
Jones converted five of his first six field goal attempts to reach double figures for the 11th time this season by the 10:46 mark before Creighton broke the game open with an 18-0 run. The Bluejays went on a 3-point shooting frenzy, sinking 8-of-12 attempts from distance in the first half. Milliken and Cole Huff shot a combined 7-of-8 from 3-point territory in the opening stanza.
The Red Storm trailed by 29 at halftime as the Bluejays shot 66.7 percent (18-of-27) from the field in the first 20 minutes. Groselle had 14 points and made all five field goal attempts in the first half.
The Bluejays cooled off from distance missing all seven attempts in the second half, but still shot 54.8 percent to maintain a double-digit advantage. Creighton capitalized on the interior, scoring 52 points in the paint and outrebounding the Red Storm by 26.
St. John's completes the regular-season Saturday at Madison Square Garden facing Providence at 12:30 p.m. on FS1.
