Red Storm to host nationally-renowned opponents Denver and Georgetown at state-of-the-art on-campus venue
QUEENS, N.Y. - For the first time in the program's history, the St. John's men's lacrosse team is slated to play a pair of games at the state-of-the-art Belson Stadium, on-campus in Queens.
The Red Storm will welcome national powers Denver and Georgetown to the newly renovated 2,000-plus seat venue for its final two home contests of the 2023 campaign. The Pioneers will make the long trek to the Big Apple for an April 15 contest slated to start at 12 p.m. The following week, the Hoyas will arrive for a Senior Day tilt scheduled for 1 p.m. The two visiting schools have been the class of the BIG EAST, combining to win six of the last eight conference titles.
"Having attended home soccer games throughout the fall, the game day experience at Belson Stadium is without a doubt one of the best in the country," Head Coach Justin Turri said. "This environment will create a unique experience for our players that our program has yet to see. We are grateful for the opportunity to showcase our program and the exciting times ahead."
Since 2002, Belson Stadium has served as the home for St. John's men's and women's soccer programs. The Red Storm men's soccer program has enjoyed a great deal of success, qualifying for 21 of the last 30 NCAA Tournament's, highlighted by a National Championship in 1996. On the women's side, the program advanced to the Round of 16 in the 2021 NCAA Tournament.
In addition, the St. John's Athletic Department has an extensive partnership with New York City F.C. The venue serves as the official home for New York City F.C. II of the newly-founded league MLS Next Pro. The NYCFC first team, who captured an MLS Cup in 2021, played a pair of home matches at Belson Stadium as part of the U.S. Open Cup.
The venue was recently upgraded with a brand new 16-by-22-foot LED high-definition video display, greatly enhancing the gameday experience for fans and players. Leading up to the games in April, additional renovations will take place to outfit Belson Stadium as a regulation lacrosse venue.
More details and broadcast information for the two contests will be released at a later date.
The full lacrosse schedule features a 14-game slate with six opponents that qualified for the 2022 NCAA Tournament and will get underway on Feb. 11 when the Johnnies take on Manhattan at a neutral site venue West Islip Stadium on Long Island.
