QUEENS, N.Y. – Former St. John's star Julian Champagnie has received an invitation to the NBA Draft Combine that runs from May 18-20 at Wintrust Arena in Chicago. Champagnie is one of just four BIG EAST players to earn an invitation alongside Collin Gillespie (Villanova), Justin Lewis (Marquette) and Aminu Mohammed (Georgetown).
Champagnie, who also participated in the 2021 NBA Draft Combine before opting to return to school, has previously declared his intention to hire an agent remain in the 2022 NBA Draft.
In his three years with the Red Storm, Champagnie poured in 1,408 points, good enough for 20th on the program's all-time scoring ledger. He averaged 16.0 points per game over 88 career appearances, 81 of which were starts. The Brooklyn native connected on 149 3-pointers, good enough for fourth all-time at St. John's, while his 81.5 percent success rate at the charity stripe marked the sixth highest career percentage in program history. He also pulled down 598 rebounds, good enough for 32nd on the Red Storm's all-time list in that category.
This past season, Champagnie earned his second consecutive First Team All-BIG EAST honor, becoming just the seventh player in St. John's history to earn the accolade more than once alongside Chris Mullin, Mark Jackson, Malik Sealy, Marcus Hatten, D'Angelo Harrison and Shamorie Ponds. He averaged 19.2 points per game, good enough for second in the league, finishing in double figures 26 times with 14 20-point efforts and a trio of 30-point performances. Champagnie also led the team in rebounds at 6.6 per game and finished second in the BIG EAST behind teammate Posh Alexander with 2.0 steals per contest.
As a sophomore in 2020-21, Champagnie grabbed a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team and shared the conference's most improved player honor after leading the league and ranking 25th nationally in scoring at 19.8 points per game. The Bishop Loughlin graduate also paced the team in rebounding and tallied seven double-doubles, good enough for second in the league.
Champagnie burst onto the scene as a freshman, earning selection to the BIG EAST All-Freshman Team and winning the MBWA All-Met Rookie of the Year Award. He averaged 9.9 points and 6.5 rebounds per contest, including outputs of 13.6 points and 7.6 rebounds over his final 10 appearances.
Champagnie will look to become the first St. John's player to hear his name called on draft night since the Cleveland Cavaliers selected Sir'Dominic Pointer 53rd overall in 2015.
