SJU had no answer for the Providence frontcourt that erased a 31-25 halftime advantage behind the solid play of Erron Maxey who recorded a double-double (13 points and 11 rebounds) and center Karim Shabazz (11 points and nine rebounds).
Junior Donald Emanuel turned in another fine performance starting his second game in a row for St. John's to register 10 points and seven rebounds. Freshman Kyle Cuffe and Willie Shaw pitched in with 11 points each but it wasn't enough to hold off the pesky Friars.
PC put the game away with 6:23 to play going on a 7-0 run with the score at 52-49. Linehan had a basket, Maxey chipped in with a layup and Chris Rogers hit a huge three-pointer to push the lead to 10 at 59-49. SJU would get no closer than seven points the rest of the way.
Omar Cook was held to five points on the night and hit just 2 of 10 from the field and veteran Anthony Glover was held scoreless, a first in his St. John's career.
The Red Storm travel to Notre Dame on Monday, February 5 for a 7:00 p.m. (EST) clash with their BIG EAST rival in South Bend, Indiana. The game will be televised as part of an ESPN "BIG MONDAY" college basketball triple-header.
