Queens, NY - Despite entering the final round of the 2004 New York State Open on Thursday with a five-stroke lead, former St. John's University men's golf standout Jesse Fitzgerald was forced to make a four-foot par putt on the 18th hole to win his first professional tournament.
After playing partner Greg Bisconti missed a 12-foot putt on the 18th that would have tied Fitzgerald and forced a playoff, he knew the tournament was back in his control. Fitzgerald sunk the putt for a final round five-over par 76 and three round total of two-under par 211 (69-66-76).
Fitzgerald, who earned $17,000 for the win, took a five-stroke lead after opening rounds of two-under par 69 and five-under par 66 at the Black Course at Bethpage State Park. This victory marked Fitzgerald's second at Bethpage Black, as he won the McLaughlin Tournament there as a member of the Red Storm.
In other Red Storm golf news, 1999 graduate Gary Blados qualified this past week for the 2004 United States Amateur to be held at Winged Foot Golf Club in Mamaroneck, NY from August 16-22. This marks the third time that Blados has qualified for the U.S. Amateur, as he also participated in 1999 and 2001.
