Red Storm On The Road To New Jersey, Faces Rutgers, Seton Hall

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's will leave the friendly confines of Belson Stadium for the first time in two weeks, as the Red Storm travels down the New Jersey turnpike to face two neighboring opponents in Rutgers and Seton Hall. The Red Storm will play Rutgers Friday night at 7 p.m. on Yurcak Field, then Seton Hall on Sunday at 1 p.m. at Owen T. Carroll Field.
The Weekend's Quick Kicks
The Red Storm (6-4-1, 2-2-0 BIG EAST) has won five of its last seven games, including a 2-2-0 slate against BIG EAST opponents. St. John's will be looking to get its first win on the road since August, when the Red Storm defeated George Mason, 2-1 (Aug. 22).
Last time on the road, St. John's lost 2-0 to Providence (Sept. 15), but followed with a 1-0 overtime-victory over Connecticut (Sept. 18) and a decisive 2-0 win vs. Villanova (Sept. 23).
The Red Storm will be looking to rebound from its latest 2-1 loss to Georgetown (Sept. 25). St. John's tied the game in the 74th minute, but the Hoyas scored a goal off a penalty kick in overtime for the win.
St. John's is 2-9-4 all-time vs. Rutgers, with a win, a loss and a tie in the last three meetings. The Red Storm is 10-4-2 against Seton Hall.
Rutgers (6-4-1) is 0-2-1 in its last three games, with their latest loss to West Virginia (Sept. 25), 1-0 in overtime. Seton Hall (7-2-2) will host Syracuse on Friday before playing the Red Storm and went 1-1 against Pittsburgh and West Virginia last weekend.
Scouting The Scarlet Knights
Rutgers will be looking to rebound off its last loss at then-No. 25 West Virginia. The Mountaineers scored in the 93rd minute for the 1-0 overtime victory. With a similar record to the Red Storm, a regional win and point for St. John's may be in important as October winds down.
Redshirt sophomore Jonelle Filigno leads the Scarlet Knights in points with 13, with six goals and an assist. Filigno has three game-winners for the season so far. Stefanee Pace and Amy Pietrangelo are in second with four points each.
In goal for the Scarlet Knights will be junior Emmy Simpkins. Simpkins has played every minute of every game and has tallied 43 saves for the season, allowing 10 goals.
Rutgers is undefeated at Yurcak (5-0) so far this season, and have not lost in Piscataway since Sept. 19, 2010 against then-No. 4 Boston College, 3-1.
Scarlet Knights vs. Red Storm - The Series
Friday's meeting is the 16th meeting between the two BIG EAST rivals. St. John's is 1-2-2 against the Scarlet Knights in their last five meetings, and Rutgers holds the series record at 9-2-4 in a series dating back to Oct. 1, 1993.
The last time these two teams met, on Oct. 17, 2010, the Red Storm and Scarlet Knights played to a double overtime scoreless tie. Kristin Russell had seven saves in goal for St. John's. The last time St. John's defeated Rutgers was on Oct. 17, 2008 at Belson Stadium, 1-0. The Red Storm is 0-7 playing on the road against Rutgers.

Scouting The Pirates
Seton Hall is second behind Georgetown in the National Division. The Pirates were riding a five-game unbeaten streak until Seton Hall lost 4-0 at West Virginia last weekend. The Pirates bounced back with a 3-0 victory at Pittsburgh (Sept. 25), with goals scored by Katie Ritter, Taylor Wilson and Caitlyn Milazzo. Ritter is the Pirates leading scorer with six goals (12 points). Wilson is close behind with 11 points off four goals and three assists.
The 7-2-2 record is the best start for Seton Hall since 1997.
Pirate goalkeeper Elizabeth Bond was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on Sept. 26, after being named Goalkeeper of the Week twice. Bond made 13 saves in the 1-1 weekend at WVU and Pitt.
Pirates vs. Red Storm - The Series
Sunday's meeting is the 16th all-time between the Pirates and the Red Storm. St. John's holds a 10-4-1 series advantage over Seton Hall in a series dating back to Oct. 24, 1994. The Red Storm has won the last nine-consecutive meetings between the two regional rivals.
The last time Seton Hall defeated St. John's was on Oct. 20, 2000 in a 1-0 decision at Belson Stadium.
Stone is also 10-4-1 against the Pirates in his head coaching tenure.
StormTracker - Last Time Out
St. John's split the weekend with a win against Villanova on Sept. 23 with goals by Jen Gibbons and Runa Stefansdottir during a rainy Friday night at Belson Stadium. The Red Storm lost 2-1 in overtime against Georgetown, who was and is currently receiving votes in the NSCAA poll after a penalty kick goal in the 92nd minute. After a scoreless first half, Georgetown scored first in the 64th minute. Rookie Caitlyn McLaughlintied it up 10 minutes later to send the game to OT. After a foul in the box, the Hoyas were given the penalty kick for the win.
Stat Of The Weekend
1-1: St. John's is 1-1 against teams from the National Division in 2011. The Red Storm defeated Villanova 2-0, but lost to Georgetown in an overtime heartbreaker, 2-1. The Red Storm has scored four goals thus far against National Division opponents. Both rookie Caitlyn McLaughlin and junior Runa Stefansdottirhave tallied three points against the National Division with a goal and an assist each.
Russell Nearing Top 3
With 295 career saves, junior goalkeeper Kristin Russellis nearing another milestone in her net-minding career. She is six saves away from tying Sherry Reill (1993-1997) at the No. 3 spot with 301 saves. Russell already holds the career records in shutouts, wins and goals against average.
In Overtime
St. John's is 1-1-1 in overtime this season, starting the 2011 home stand with a scoreless double overtime tie with Fordham (Aug. 26). The Red Storm defeated UConn, 1-0 in the extra period, but lost to Georgetown, 2-1 in its latest overtime match up (Sept. 25).
Red Storm Regionally Ranked
St. John's remains in the top 10 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Northeast Regional Division I poll on Sept. 27. The Red Storm joins fellow BIG EAST opponents Marquette (1), West Virginia (2), Georgetown (4) and Seton Hall (5), Louisville (7), USF (7) and Rutgers (9). The Red Storm entered the poll at No. 10 on Sept. 6.

St. John's will continue on its four-game road swing as the Red Storm travels to West Virginia and Pittsburgh. St. John's will play in Morgantown on Friday, Oct. 7 for a 7 p.m. start against the No. 22/21 Mountaineers.
