QUEENS, N.Y. - Former St. John's goalkeeper Derby Carrillo will return to the United States and continue his professional career with the Atlanta Silverbacks after signing a contract with the North American Soccer League (NASL) team based in Atlanta.
The native of El Salvador joins the Silverbacks after a stint with Santa Tecla FC of the Salvadoran Premier Division. Carrillo has also earned three caps for the El Salvador National Team, including a shutout performance against Belize in his national team debut.
The goalkeeper played for Cal FC, an amateur squad owned by Silverbacks Technical Director Eric Wynalda, in the 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup and helped lead the team on a historic run. On its way to becoming just the sixth amateur team in the MLS Era to reach the fourth round, Cal FC defeated the Portland Timbers to become the first team from the amateur U.S. Adult Soccer Association to defeat an MLS squad in the history of the U.S. Open Cup.
Carrillo signed his first professional contract with USL Pro squad FC New York in 2011 after training with the Seattle Sounders for one season following graduation.
The goalkeeper appeared in 23 games, including 22 starts, in two seasons with the Red Storm and posted a 9-3-10 record to go with 11 shutouts and a 0.49 goals against average. The starting keeper of the 2009 squad that won the BIG EAST Tournament, Carrillo was also a member of the 2008 NCAA College Cup team.
Atlanta opens the 2014 NASL season on April 13 with a game against the New York Cosmos in Hempstead, N.Y.
