QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's Athletic Department broke ground on the installment of a new turf field for DaSilva Memorial Field, home of the Red Storm lacrosse team. LandTek, an on-site general contractor that specializes in sports facility design and construction, is set to complete the installation designed by FieldTurf by mid-August.
"We are excited about the renovation of DaSilva Memorial Field, and the installation of a brand new state-of-the-art FieldTurf surface," said Senior Associate Athletics Director John Diffley. "This project will result in a top-quality field that will greatly benefit our student-athletes for practice and competition."
LandTek will install a Multi40 turf, which features ballast layers of sand and top layers of performance infill for proven playability. The turf is complete with a separate underpad for proper player safety.
St. John's elected to use an Ecosport infill system, which is highlighted by an extruded composite of recycled turf and thermoplastic elastomer (TPE). EcoSport turf is outfitted with the highest quality, eco-friendly infill materials in the industry.
The new FieldTurf surface will feature both St. John's and BIG EAST branding. The upgraded turf playing surface complements a modernized six-lane track that was installed at DaSilva Memorial Field in 2014. The new turf is part of a series of St. John's Athletics Facilities upgrades to be completed by the end of the summer.
FieldTurf, an industry leader for more than 20 years, is a leading company in providing facilities with long-pile, infilled artificial turf. The company is a proven global market leader in synthetic sports fields with more than 7,000 fields installed, including those used for two Super Bowls, the World Series, the World Baseball Classic, a Major League Soccer Cup final and College Bowl games.
