Junior right-hander garners second preseason All-America nod of the year
St. John's right-hander Sean Mooney has garnered the latest in a long line of individual accolades, earning a spot on the Perfect Game Preseason All-America Second Team.
Â
Mooney, who was named a Third Team All-American by the publication at the conclusion of the 2018 campaign, enters his junior year with one of the most impressive resumes in all of college baseball. The Marmora, N.J., native boasts a record of 19-5 in 29 career starts. In 32 total appearances, Mooney sports an ERA of 2.12 to go along with 192 strikeouts and just 44 walks. In two seasons, opponents have hit just .203 off of Mooney. In addition to his All-America nod from Perfect Game in 2018, Mooney also took home second team All-America accolades from Collegiate Baseball, the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association and the American Baseball Coaches Association/Rawlings.
Â
Last year, Mooney tied the St. John's single-season wins record, becoming just the third pitcher in program history to register 11 victories in a single campaign. A unanimous First Team All-BIG EAST selection, Mooney went 11-3 with a 2.56 ERA in 16 appearances, all of which were starts. He struck out 104 batters and surrendered just 28 walks, becoming only the sixth pitcher in St. John's history to fan 100 or more opponents in a single season.
Â
As a freshman, Mooney exploded onto the national scene, turning in a record of 8-2 with a 1.71 ERA and garnering national freshman pitcher of the year honors from Collegiate Baseball and the NCBWA. Only the second player in conference history to be named the BIG EAST Pitcher of the Year and Freshman of the Year simultaneously, Mooney claimed Third Team All-America accolades from Collegiate Baseball, the NCBWA and the ABCA/Rawlings. He entered the postseason with a record of 8-0 and a 1.10 ERA before dropping consecutive decisions against Xavier and Vanderbilt.
Â
Mooney and the Red Storm, who were picked to repeat as BIG EAST champs, will begin their quest for a 10th league title on Feb. 15 with a three-game series at UCLA.
