The righty picks up first conference accolade with his seven-strikeout performance against Villanova
QUEENS, N.Y. – After helping St. John's sweep Villanova over the weekend, reliever Jed Boyle has been named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll, as announced by the conference on Monday.
The Syracuse, N.Y., native picked up his first career BIG EAST weekly accolade following his two dominant appearances in Plymouth Meeting, Pa. Boyle secured his third save of the season in the Johnnies' 13-7 victory on Friday, coming in with a runner on second in the eighth and inducing the first of four straight flyouts to end the game.
Boyle followed up with a career performance on Sunday, helping the Johnnies to a 3-1 victory with his 2.1 innings of scoreless work. Coming on in the 10th frame with the bases loaded, the Red Storm reliever fired a strike across the letters to stave off Villanova's threat. After a leadoff walk to open the bottom of the 11th inning, Boyle struck out the side in order. He capped off his outing with another emphatic strike three after the Wildcats loaded the bases in the 12th, but blew a strike past Shane Solari for his seventh punchout of the afternoon. Boyle tossed 56 pitches in relief, 40 of which went for strikes.
Boyle has been one of the best relievers for the Red Storm this season, logging a 0.79 ERA and 16 strikeouts through 11.1 innings of work. The opposition is hitting just .128 against Boyle this season.
The Johnnies will return to action on Friday when they start a three-game series against UConn at Elliot Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m.
