Red Storm duo played pivotal role in Johnnies 1-0 win at Saint Joseph’s
NEW YORK – St. John's Women's Soccer players Kayla Bower and Madison Mariani were tabbed to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll after fueling the Red Storm to a 1-0 victory over Saint Joseph's, the conference office announced on Monday.
The duo played integral role Sunday's road win over the Hawks with Mariani tallying the game-winner in the 66th minute and Bower locking it down in net with a 90-minute clean sheet at Sweeney Field.
Mariani tallied her first collegiate goal on Sunday netting the decisive tally that lifted the Red Storm to its first victory of the season. In the 66th minute, the sophomore attacker received a pass out-wide from Daniela Monzon. The Richmond Hill, Ontario native darted towards the goal separating herself from the Hawks defense with an impressive cutback in the box. She took advantage of the created space firing a left-footed line drive into the right side of the twine to give St. John's a lead it never relinquished.
Mariani has made two appearances and one start leading the team with three shot attempts. As a freshman in 2024, the winger made 16 appearances, logged a pair of assists and 20 shots. The weekly honor roll nod marks the first of her career.
Bower lands on the honor roll after recording her first-ever solo shutout on Sunday in the win over Saint Joseph's. The senior captain logged a career-high five saves, surpassing her previous personal best of four she set on four occasions. The Lincoln Park, N.J. made several key saves and cleared away danger holding the Hawks scoreless for 90 minutes at home.
The two players earning conference recognition marks the program's most since Sept. 16, 2024 when four Johnnies garnered BIG EAST Weekly awards.
The St. John's women's soccer team will return to action for its home opener on Sunday when it welcomes Youngstown State for a 1 p.m. contest at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium.
