St. John's Shines on Day One of Penn Relays

Odoemene takes bronze and two relay teams qualify for College Final
PHILADELPHIA, Pa. (April 25, 2019) – Senior Jennifer Odoemene and two relay squads shine for the St. John's track & field team at the Penn Relays on Thursday.
In the hammer throw, Odoemene beat 27 competitors to pick up the bronze medal. Her distance of 55.43 meters nearly eclipsed her personal-record of 55.55 meters set at the Metropolitan Outdoor Championships two weeks ago. The West Orange, N.J., native was the only athlete to launch the hammer over 55 meters in four throws.
The Johnnies' 4x100 meter relay squad of Ja'Tae Joyner, Leah Anderson, Skyy Diop and Destiny Davis registered their fastest time of the season, placing second in their heat with a time of 46.12 seconds to reach the College Final. Out of the 69 teams that competed in the event, the Red Storm finished in 10th place. The Red Storm's foursome is slated to race for the gold at 1 p.m., on Friday.
Also joining the College Final will be the Head Coach Jim Hurt's 4x400 meter relay team. Torisha LaForce, Kafi Ottley, Chenoa Sebastian, and Anderson earned the last spot in the group sprint final, crossing the line at 3:44.07. The chase for the 4x400 meter gold will take place at 2:07 p.m., on Saturday.
Sebastian also competed in the 400 meter hurdles, earning third place in her heat with a time of 1:03.45.
Prior to the official start of the Penn Relays, Eboni Birch competed in the heptathlon and earned a fifth-place finish. She posted the top mark in the shot put with a distance of 11.67 meters to score 639 of her 3720 points.
The Red Storm returns to Franklin Field tomorrow morning, beginning with Joyner in the triple jump at 11:00 a.m.
