Rising junior named to the All-America Third Team
QUEENS, N.Y.  – After leading the BIG EAST in scoring last season, rising junior wing Julian Champagnie has been named to the Preseason All-America Third Team by Athlon Sports.Â
Â
Champagnie is one of two BIG EAST players alongside Villanova's Collin Gillespie to earn preseason All-America status from Athlon Sports.
Â
The Brooklyn native, who tested the NBA Draft waters this offseason before opting to return to Queens, averaged a BIG-EAST-best 19.8 points per game for the 16-11 Johnnies, who put forth their first winning effort in conference play since 2014-15. He reached double figures in all 25 of his appearances and eclipsed the 20-point plateau 11 times, including a career-best 33-point showing at Creighton.
Â
For his efforts, Champagnie was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team and shared the conference's Most Improved Player honors with Xavier's Zach Freemantle. He became just the fourth player in program history to lead the BIG EAST in scoring over the course of a conference season, joining Chris Mullin (1983-84, Water Berry (1985-86) and Marcus Hatten (2001-02). Champagnie also became just the fifth Johnnie to earn First Team All-BIG EAST honors as a sophomore, joining fellow New York City natives Mullin, Ron Artest, Erick Barkley and Shamorie Ponds.
Â
In addition to leading the BIG EAST in scoring, he also topped the league in free throw percentage (88.7%) while ranking fifth in 3-pointers made (2.4), seventh in rebounding (7.4), fourth in steals (1.4) and ninth in blocks (1.0). His seven double-doubles on the campaign also placed second in the conference. Â
Â
Champagnie and the Red Storm will open the 2021-22 season on Nov. 9 when they host Mississippi Valley State inside Carnesecca Arena. Season tickets for the upcoming campaign are on sale now and can be secured by calling 1-888-GO-STORM or by visiting RedStormTix.com.
