Red Storm will play four BIG EAST home games at Madison Square Garden
QUEENS, N.Y. – The BIG EAST Conference released the men's basketball schedule for the upcoming 2021-22 league season on Thursday. Tip times and television designations will be announced at a later date.
The Red Storm will meet all 10 conference foes both home and away with four of those home tilts coming at "The World's Most Famous Arena," Madison Square Garden.
After playing just one game at The Garden a season ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Johnnies are scheduled to host five regular season games in Midtown this season. The Red Storm has called MSG home for more than 90 years, playing at least one game in the famed building every season since 1930-31.
The 2021-22 BIG EAST season will begin on Monday, Dec. 20, when the Red Storm travels to face local rival Seton Hall in Newark. Last year, the Red Storm dropped its BIG EAST opener at Prudential Center before downing the Pirates three months later to close the regular season in Queens.
Two days before Christmas, the Red Storm will host its BIG EAST home opener when Butler visits Carnesecca Arena on Dec. 23. Last season, an early-January date with the Bulldogs in Queens kick started a 7-1 stretch for the Johnnies, helping the Red Storm record its first winning record in BIG EAST play since 2014-15.
The Red Storm will play its third and final December conference game on Dec. 29 when the Johnnies host Marquette in Queens. Last season, St. John's and the Golden Eagles split their regular season series with each team claiming a victory on the road.
The Johnnies will open 2022 on New Year's Day in the nation's capital, taking on Georgetown at Capital One Arena. Last season, St. John's and Georgetown met one another in on-campus arenas for the first time since the 1980-81 campaign.
After returning to New York for a Jan. 5 date with DePaul at Carnesecca Arena, the Johnnies will hit the road for back-to-back games in New England, visiting Providence on Jan. 8 before taking on Connecticut on Jan. 12. The Red Storm emerged victorious at both of those locations a season ago, overcoming a 14-point deficit against No. 23 UConn on MLK Day before hanging up 92 points on the Friars three weeks later.
On Jan. 16, the Red Storm will play a regular season game at Madison Square Garden for the first time in 22 months when the Johnnies host Georgetown at "The Mecca." The two teams last met at MSG on March 11, 2020, in the final full game before the college basketball world shut down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Johnnies trailed by as many as 15 in the second half before ending the game on a 23-0 run.
The Red Storm will head to Omaha on Jan. 19 to face Creighton before returning home to MSG to host Seton Hall on Jan. 22. The Bluejays were the only BIG EAST team that St. John's failed to best at least once last season.
Following a week off from competition, the Red Storm will resume its BIG EAST schedule on Jan. 29 when the Johnnies head to Villanova to take on Jay Wright's Wildcats at Finneran Pavilion.
St. John's will kick off February at Carnesecca Arena against Providence on Feb. 1 before traveling to Hinkle Fieldhouse for a Feb. 5 showdown with Butler. After narrowly falling to the Bulldogs in overtime a season ago, St. John's will travel to Indianapolis looking to snap a seven-game losing streak inside the Midwestern basketball cathedral.
The Red Storm will play back-to-back games at Madison Square Garden on Feb. 8 and Feb. 13, welcoming Villanova before hosting UConn for its first regular season conference game at MSG since 2013.
Following its two-game MSG homestand, St. John's will alternate home and away contests for the remainder of the regular season beginning with a Feb. 16 trip to Xavier. After snapping a 12-game losing streak to the Musketeers last February at Carnesecca Arena, the Johnnies will seek to leave Cincinnati with a win for the first time since 2015, a streak of six straight defeats in The Queen City.
St. John's will host Creighton on Feb. 23 at Carnesecca Arena before making a return trip to The Windy City on Feb. 27 to take on DePaul in its first year under Head Coach Tony Stubblefield. St. John's is 3-1 all-time at Wintrust Arena and a perfect 2-0 in the building under Head Coach Mike Anderson.
The Red Storm will play Xavier for the second time in as many weeks on March 2 when the Musketeers visit Carnesecca Arena for the final St. John's home game of the regular season.
The Johnnies will end the 2021-22 regular season on the road, taking on Shaka Smart and Marquette on March 5 in Milwaukee.
Before beginning its 20-game conference slate, St. John's will play 11 non-league games, 10 of which will be contested in the New York Metropolitan Area. St. John's will open play at Carnesecca Arena on Wednesday, October 27, hosting an exhibition contest against Baruch.

In 2020-21, St. John's turned in its second consecutive winning effort under Anderson and logged its best finish in the BIG EAST regular season standings since 2000. Anderson was named the BIG EAST Coach of the Year while two of his players, Julian Champagnie and Posh Alexander, garnered end-of-season recognition from the conference. Champagnie found a spot on the All-BIG EAST First Team and shared the league's most improved player honor while Alexander was named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Year and split the conference's defensive player of the year accolade. The Brooklyn native became just the third player in league history to win both awards simultaneously, joining a pair of Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Famers in Allen Iverson and Patrick Ewing.
