St. John's (3-2) dropped a heartbreaker in its Players Era Tournament opener on Monday against No. 15/13 Iowa State. After trailing by as many as seven in the second half, St. John's retook the lead following back-to-back Oziyah Sellers' 3-pointers with just over two minutes to play. The Cyclones, however, managed to keep the Red Storm off the board until the game's final second and escape with an 83-82 victory.
Sellers scored a season-high 20 points to lead the Red Storm. Zuby Ejiofor and Bryce Hopkins tallied 16 points apiece while Dillon Mitchell narrowly missed his second straight double-double with 12 points and nine boards. Ejiofor and Hopkins grabbed nine and seven rebounds, respectively.
Both of the Red Storm's losses this season have come at the hands of top-15 opponents. Against unranked foes, St. John's boasts a 38.3-point average margin of victory.
Baylor (4-0) was a winner on the opening day of the Players Era Championship, pulling away from Creighton over the closing minutes for an 81-74 win. Redshirt sophomore Cameron Carr led the way for the Bears, posting 21 points and nine rebounds to pace five Baylor players in double figures. On the season, Carr is averaging a whopping 23.0 points per game, having scored 21 or more in three of his four appearances.
The Red Storm's third opponent at the Players Era Festival will be determined at the conclusion of Tuesday's action.
