The Academic Support program assigns each varsity team an athletic academic advisor. Each advisor serves as a key contact for student-athletes seeking academic assistance and helps the student-athletes navigate the academic community. Utilizing the Developmental Advising Model, the academic support staff creates an individualized educational plan based on each student's strengths and weaknesses. Advisors are in regular contact with instructors through progress reports, phone calls and e-mails. This information is used as a source of intervention to identify problem areas and make necessary recommendations for improvement. The advisor works closely with their assigned students to monitor their academic progress throughout the semester.
Since 2009, Student-Athletes who have achieved a 3.0 or higher cumulative GPA has remained above 60%.

Study Center:
The study center program provides a managed study environment. The program balances the need for structure and the student having to take responsibility for his/her own work. Each student-athlete is responsible for 6 hours of monitored study per week. Students are required to use their Red Storm Identification card to swipe in and out of the Study Center. Hours are recorded using a tracking system throughout campus. There are a number of options available for these hours to be completed. We encourage our student-athletes to utilize the resources available to them on campus in order to individualize their educational plans. Students can accumulate hours by attending the designated study center location or by meeting with a tutor, attending professor's office hours, attending review sessions or attending study groups facilitated by the academic support staff.
Tutoring:
Student-athletes are assisted through the tutoring program by undergraduate students, graduate students and professional tutors, all of whom have successfully completed the Student Development tutor training program. The tutoring program provides supplemental support at times conducive to the athletes' demanding schedules. These services are provided during weekday, weekend and evening hours. Students meet with tutors for subject-specific sessions, and/or they can meet with academic coaches to improve skills with commonly challenging issues such as time management and organization. In 2015-2016, our tutor training program received International Recertification from the College of Reading and Learning Association (CRLA) as an International Tutoring Program. Each year our tutors receive their individual CRLA certifications through our tutor training program. Student-athletes interested in requesting a tutor should see their academic advisor as soon as possible.
Academic Coaches:
Academic coaches assist student-athletes in not only learning content of a particular course, but also educating students on how to learn the material in the most effective way. Academic coaching sessions are designed for students in need of extra assistance in developing valuable learning strategies. While tutoring sessions are subject-specific, academic coaching sessions include overarching issues such as time management, study skills, procrastination, reading comprehension, listening, note-taking strategies and more. Academic coaches’ overall goal is to assist the student-athletes learning how to improve their academic skills on big-picture levels, which will benefit them in the future.
Student-Athlete Orientation:
As a way to welcome and introduce our new St. John's student-athletes, all incoming student-athletes (freshmen and transfer) are required to attend a one-day , interactive program just prior to the start of the Fall semester. Upperclass student-athletes serve as Orientation Leaders throughout the day.
#StormChat:
The #StormChat speaker series was launched in 2019, with the goal of enhancing the student-athlete experience. Through touching a variety of topics, #StormChat aims to bring together the St. John's community by utilizing alumni, New York City connections, wellness professionals, coaches, and staff as guest speakers or panelists for these events.
Teamworks:
Partnered in 2018, Teamworks has been used to connect the St. John’s Athletics community. This platform is used to track tutoring appointments for student-athletes, study hall hours, communicate on a mass scale to Athletics and organize team and office calendars. St. John's University has been able to leverage Teamworks to enhance internal and external communication and centralize the flow of information regarding scholar-athlete services. The centralization of information through Teamworks simplifies logistics, allowing for minimal distractions to set scholar-athletes up for success in both the classroom and competition.
Priority Registration:
Twice a year, students must register for classes. The Student Development office takes the opportunity to aid student-athletes with registration by providing an athletics priority number. This allows student-athletes minimize missed class time and schedule classes around practices. During this time of year, deans from schools within St. John’s come to the office to meet with students who are having difficulties registering or aiding them in selecting the best classes for them and their schedules.
