St. John's University Athletics
Leadership Development & Recognition
The most prominent student-athlete leadership organization is the Student Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC). SAAC is a nationally recognized student-athlete leadership organization, sponsored by the NCAA and recognized by the university. The SAAC is made up of student-athletes from all 17 intercollegiate athletic teams at St. John's University. The SAAC is responsible for promoting communication between athletics administration and student-athletes, disseminating information, providing feedback and insight into athletics department issues, generating a student-athlete voice within the campus athletics department during the formation of policies, building a sense of community within the athletics program involving all athletic teams, soliciting student-athlete responses to proposed conference and NCAA legislation, organizing community service efforts, creating a vehicle for student-athlete representation on campus-wide committees, and promoting a positive student-athlete image on campus.
This 2021-2022 academic year, SAAC collaborated with #StormChat, and orchestrated a student-athlete-led panel: Grit Panel: Mental Health and Overcoming Adversity. SAAC also collaborated with the SOAR office on campus, participating in The Clothesline Project—with a focus on raising awareness for survivors of sexual assault, through creating supportive t-shirts. SAAC also had a leading role in Athletics Service Week, Solidarity Week, and other conference initiatives.
