St. John's University Athletics
Frequently Asked Questions

What sports do you cheer for?
We cheer for our Men's and Women's Soccer teams at Belson stadium. We cheer for our Women's Volleyball team at Carnesecca Arena. We also cheer in Madison Square Garden, as well as Carnesecca Arena, for both our Men's and Women's Basketball teams.
When are tryouts?
Tryouts will be held late Spring, consisting of two days. If there is a reason an athlete is unable to attend on-campus tryouts, there will be an option for a video tryout. Video tryouts will only be accepted if they are approved in advance by the coach. There will not be fall tryouts, unless otherwise posted.
How many members are on the team?
The team has ranged between 18-24 athletes. 20 female athletes are able to compete on the mat for Division I, UCA Nationals.
What are benefits of being on team?
Other than continuing your cheer career and being part of a team - we are sponsored by Nike. Gear provided in includes several practice outfits, uniforms, warm ups, backpacks, cheer shoes and running sneakers. Cheerleaders get priority registration for classes, strength and conditioning programs, transportation to and from games, and tons of publicity (TV, radio, magazines, social media, etc). Team members may also have opportunities to travel for postseason games.
What is the schedule like?
The weekly schedule consists of three team practices for 2-3 hours, additional workouts in the fitness center, university events and games as scheduled during the season. If there is a time where everyday has an event, the schedule will be adjusted to keep from overwhelming our athletes.
What is the summer schedule like?
During the school year, practices and games keep the team busy from August to May, so it is important to have a short off season for the summer to train individually.
The team has the months of May, June, and July to train individually at home. Each athlete will be given summer workouts to complete and check ins throughout the summer. There may be optional practices offered throughout the summer, but you will not be required to come back to school until work week prior to camp. Camp and work week usually start the first week of August and ends the second week.
Is camp mandatory? Is it paid for?
Camp IS mandatory. If you are unable to attend summer camp, you will not be able to be a part of the team. Camp is currently not a covered expense in the program. Camp typically costs around $320.
