QUEENS, N.Y. - Following a standout collegiate career as a midfielder at St. John's, Jimmy Mulligan is ready to begin his professional career after signing a contract with the New York Cosmos of the North American Soccer League (NASL).
"For any kid growing up, it's a dream to play for their local team," Mulligan said in a statement. "As a New Yorker, I'm thrilled to be signing with the Cosmos and for the opportunity to play for a team with such a revered history."
Mulligan capped his Red Storm career by earning both third team NSCAA All-Northeast Region accolades and second team All-BIG EAST honors. The team captain helped lead St. John's to an 11-7-2 record and an appearance in the NCAA Tournament Second Round.
The midfielder also garnered both third team NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-America and first team NSCAA/adidas Scholar All-East Region honors for his combined achievements both on the field and in the classroom.
One of just four players to start all 20 games for the Red Storm in 2013, the midfielder finished second among all field players with 1,879 minutes played. Mulligan scored a career-high four goals and also added a pair of assists to finish with a career-high 10 points. Mulligan ranked tied for sixth in the league in regular season play with a career-best two game-winning goals.
Mulligan appeared in all 80 Red Storm games in the past four seasons, including 66 starts. The midfielder totaled eight goals, three game-winners, and nine assists for 25 points.
The Cosmos open the 2014 season at home on April 13 against the Atlanta Silverbacks at Shuart Stadium on the campus of Hofstra University.
