SJU had built a 65-58 lead on a layup by Glover with 4:30 to play but Fordham went on an 8-0 run to take a brief 66-65 lead on a hook shot by Jeff McMillan with 1:39 left in the game. Shaw responded for St. John's driving to the basket with 18:4 seconds left, was fouled, and converted two free throws to give the Red Storm their last lead at 67-66. That's when the drama unfolded.
Robin (who finished with 17 points and seven assists in 40 minutes), took an inbounds pass and calmly drove the right side of the lane past freshman guard Omar Cook. Help came late for Cook as Glover and Diakite tried to close the lane but Robin lofted a high, arcing shot which found the bottom of the net with just 3.7 ticks of the clock remaining. St. John's got a final shot off but Shaw's off-balanced three pointer hit the back of the rim and bounced off as time expired.
Cook had 12 points, seven assists and three steals in 37 minutes in a losing effort for the Red Storm. Glover barely missed a double-double ripping down nine rebounds to go with his 18 points to lead SJU.
Fordham had five players in double figures including Duke Freeman-McKamey, Teremun Johnson and Jeff McMillan (10 points each) and Jason Harris, who came off the bench to finish with 11 points on 3 of 8 from three-point range.
St. John's lost the battle of the boards 48-36 and shot just 17 of 27 from the free throw line (63%), which hurt the Red Storm down the stretch. In addition, the Red Storm were outscored 21-2 in the last four minutes of each half.
The going gets tougher for St. John's as they lace up their sneakers again on Wednesday night, December 13, for a non-conference clash with BIG TEN rival Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio. The game will be broadcast on ESPN2 at 7:00 p.m. EST, and will air live on WFAN 660AM radio.
