David is extremely qualified to take on the important task of guiding our Athletic Program, said Rev. Donald J. Harrington, C.M., President of St. Johns University. His abilities and loyalty to St. Johns have been proven time and again and I am confident that he will lead our student-athletes and our university to even greater heights.
I am proud to have been presented with this unique and exciting opportunity to build upon the rich tradition of St. Johns University Athletics, Mr. Wegrzyn said. It is with great enthusiasm that I look forward to, once again, working with our coaches, administrators and student-athletes. In my new role, overseeing both Athletics and Development, we will be able to capitalize on the synergies between departments and enhance the St. Johns experience for both students and alumni.
Mr. Wegrzyn has worked in St. Johns Development and Institutional Advancement Offices since 1997. Prior to that, he served as Associate Athletic Director for External Affairs and Assistant Athletic Director/Marketing and Promotions from 1992 to 1997. He has also worked in the Department of Intercollegiate Athletics-Marketing and Promotions at Temple University and in the Offices of The BIG EAST Conference in Providence, RI. Mr. Wegrzyn earned his B.S. in Business Administration at Bryant College and his masters in Sports Administration at Temple.
Also as part of the Athletic Department restructuring, Kathleen Meehan, Senior Associate Director of Athletics will oversee day-to-day operations of the Athletic Department as its new Associate Vice President. Ms. Meehan has served as St. Johns Senior Associate Athletic Director since 1993; as Associate Athletic Director for Intercollegiate Sports from 1985 to 1993; and as Womens Athletic Director and Womens Intramural Director. She received both her B.S. and masters degrees from St. Johns and was a member of the Universitys first Varsity Womens Basketball Team in 1975.
Kathy will play an essential role in the vitality of our Athletic Department. Her years of experience will benefit us all, especially our student-athletes. I am extremely pleased to have her in such a key position at St. Johns, said Fr. Harrington.
