QUEENS, N.Y. - The No. 15/15 St. John's men's soccer team remained unbeaten at home this season, playing Seton Hall to a 0-0 draw. Derby Carrillo made three saves to post his fourth shutout of the year for St. John's (2-1-3, 1-0-1). Paul McHenry made seven saves in goal for Seton Hall (4-2-1, 1-0-1).
"Seton Hall is very a physical team and this was a hard-fought BIG EAST battle," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "We were able to create more opportunities as the game went on, but their keeper made some spectacular saves."
St. John's had the first good opportunity in just the 4th minute as Walter Hines sent a header on net, but McHenry made the save. McHenry then stopped an Adam Himeno shot in the 9th minute and a Pablo Punyed attempt in the 16th minute.
The Pirates had their first scoring chance in the 24th minute, but Carrillo came up with the save on a Giovanni Zammiello shot. After saving a Bryan Longo shot in the 25th minute, Carrillo stopped an Andrew Welker shot in the 27th minute and the teams remained scoreless at halftime.
In the second half, Hines had another shot saved by McHenry in the 76th minute. McHenry then stopped a curving shot from distance by Nelson Becerra in the 81st minute to keep St. John's off the board.
Sverre Wegge Gundhus had the final scoring chance of regulation in 86th minute, but McHenry came up with his sixth save of the game to force overtime.
It was Wegge Gundhus that had the best scoring chance of the game in the 97th minute. Becerra sent a pass in behind the defense, creating a one-on-one for Wegge Gundhus and McHenry. Wegge Gundhus dribbled into the box and McHenry came off of his line to make a spectacular save and keep the game scoreless.
St. John's next travels to face Connecticut at 7 p.m. on Sept. 25.
Notes: Omar Edwards made his collegiate debut and played 17 minutes off the bench ... Carrillo extended his scoreless streak to 256:44.
