Andrew Porucznik Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

Porucznik scored the game-winner in St. John’s victory over No. 19 Akron on Friday night
NEW YORK– After scoring the game-winner in St. John's come from behind victory over No. 19 Akron, Andrew Porucznik was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, the league office announced on Monday afternoon.
Porucznik tucked home the game-winner in the 85th minute at FirstEnergy stadium, marking the first decisive goal of his young collegiate career. With 5:28 remaining. Gabin Thomelier played a cross into the center of the 18-yard box as the forward slid into the incoming pass directing a strike to the bottom right corner of the net. The pivotal road victory marked the Johnnies' first win over a top-20 opponent away from home since it downed then-No. 13 Providence in the Ocean State on March 13, 2021. The Red Storm improved to 1-0-2 on the year against opponents ranked inside the top-20 of the United Soccer Coaches' poll.
On the year, the Mahwah, N.J., native has started in all 11 matches, playing a full 90 minutes in seven contests. Porucznik is tied for the team lead in shots (15) and ranks tied for second on the squad in goals (2) and points (4).
Porucznik becomes the second St. John's player to captured the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week award this season, joining teammate Guilherme Gomes. Gomes earned the honor on Sept. 2 after becoming the first rookie in program history to score four goals in a single-game in a 5-0 rout of New Hampshire on Aug. 28.
Porucznik and the Red Storm will return home for a BIG EAST contest against Providence on Saturday, Oct. 11 at 5 p.m.
