St. John’s to Welcome Providence on Saturday

Red Storm upset No. 19 Akron on the road in its last match, 2-1
QUEENS, N.Y.– The St. John's Men's Soccer team (5-3-3, 1-1-1 BIG EAST) will welcome Providence (4-5-1, 2-1-0 BIG EAST) on Saturday night for a BIG EAST clash at Cox Family Field at Belson Stadium, set to kick-off at 5 p.m..
The contest will be streamed on ESPN+ with Kevin Connelly on the call from Queens. Live stats will be available on RedStormSports.com.
As part of a tripleheader on Saturday, the men's soccer team will be wearing pink "One Storm. One Cause" t-shirts in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness month. The first 300 fans in attendance will receive a t-shirt at the gate.
The Red Storm in its last match captured a come from behind 2-1 victory at then-No. 19 Akron on Friday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. The Johnnies tallied a pair of goals over the final 18:21 to earn a top-20 win on the road. St. John's currently holds a 1-0-2 mark against opponents ranked in the United Soccer Coaches' Top-25 poll.
Andrew Porucnzik tucked home the game-winner with a sliding finish in the 85th minute off a feed from Gabin Thomelier. Following the freshman's decisive goal at Akron he was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week on Monday. The Mahwah, N.J., native ranks tied with a team-high 15 shots and ranks second in goals (2) and points (4).
Gabe Smyth tallied the first goal in the 72nd minute heading in the equalizer off a set piece. Julian Jakopovic and Ivar Na Aga added the helpers off the corner kick. Alec McLachlan sealed the road win a pair of crucial stops over the final five minutes in Akron, Ohio.
The Red Storm will return home for the first time in 22 days when it closed a five-match homestand against Xavier in a 1-1 draw to begin conference play on Sept. 19. The Johnnies are 3-1-2 at Belson Stadium this season and are outshooting opponents, 95-31, in Queens. Since the venue opened in 2002, St. John's has recorded a 141-51-43 (.696) overall record. The Johnnies have recorded 11 of their 14 goals at home.
The Johnnies' top-20 road victory last Friday marked the program's first since it defeated then-No. 13 Providence on March 10, 2021, which marked St. John's last win in the series. Last year, the two sides that shared the 2024 Co-BIG EAST East Division Championship tied in the regular season before the Friars outlasted the Johnnies in the BIG EAST Tournament Semifinals, 2-1. The Red Storm lead the all-time series 21-12-7.
Providence enters the match with a 4-5-1 overall record and a 2-1 mark in conference competition. The Friars are 2-0-1 over their last three contests, including a 5-0 rout of Villanova on Oct. 3. Ian Abbey and Bruno Rosa pace the squad with three goals and two assists (eight points). Rosa ranks top-five in the country in shot accuracy (.150).
Following Saturday's contest, St. John's will continue its BIG EAST slate on Oct. 17 when it visits UConn at Morrone Stadium at 7 p.m.
