QUEENS, N.Y. - Matchups against seven teams that participated in the 2014 NCAA Tournament, including five national seeds, and a total of 11 games against teams that posted at least 10 wins a season ago, are among the highlights of an 18-game regular season schedule for St. John's as part of the upcoming 2015 campaign.
St. John's will take the field for two exhibition games before regular season play begins. After hosting Manhattan (Aug. 15) at Belson Stadium, St. John's concludes the preseason portion of its schedule on the road against Penn State (Aug. 22).
"This will be a demanding schedule for a young team, but we are excited for the challenge," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "We have scheduled non-conference games against teams that are consistently at or near the top of their respective leagues and then we'll get into another tough BIG EAST season."
The regular season opens at the adidas/IU Credit Union Classic against a pair of 2014 NCAA Tournament national seeds from a season ago. The Red Storm opens against host-Indiana (Aug. 28), the No. 5 national seed, before taking on Maryland (Aug. 30), which was the No. 4 national seed.
"We will be tested right out of the gate as we open with games against perennial contenders Indiana and Maryland on the first weekend," Masur remarked.
St. John's then returns to Queens to open an eight-game homestand that spans the entire month of September. The Red Storm hosts Ivy League foe Princeton (Sept. 4) in the home-opener at Belson Stadium before welcoming local rival Hofstra (Sept. 6).
Following a matchup with 2014 NCAA Tournament opponent Denver (Sept. 12), St. John's welcomes in-state foe Siena (Sept. 15) before hosting Wisconsin (Sept. 19) and Quinnipiac (Sept. 22).
The Red Storm opens BIG EAST play at home against Marquette (Sept. 26) before closing out the eight-game homestand against Central Connecticut (Sept. 29).
"The BIG EAST is as strong as ever," added Masur. "Three teams earned national seeds in the NCAA Tournament last season and Providence made a run to the College Cup. The league has earned nine Tournament bids in just the past two seasons and I expect the high level of competition to continue."
A road game at Seton Hall (Oct. 3) marks the first of eight-straight conference games to close out the regular season. The Red Storm then travels to Creighton (Oct. 10), which earned the No. 12 national seed in the 2014 NCAA Tournament and reached the Quarterfinals.
St. John's returns to Belson and hosts 2014 NCAA Tournament foe Xavier (Oct. 14), which advanced to the Round of 16, before heading back out on the road to face Butler (Oct. 17).
After hosting Georgetown (Oct. 24), which earned the No. 8 national seed and reached the 2014 NCAA Tournament Quarterfinals, St. John's concludes the home portion of its regular season schedule with a Senior Night matchup against Villanova (Oct. 28).
St. John's next travels to take on DePaul (Oct. 31) before concluding the regular season on the road against Providence (Nov. 6), which earned the No. 11 national seed and advanced to the NCAA College Cup.
