Matt Forster tallied a goal and an assist to lead the Red Storm
The St. John's men's soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to three on Tuesday night, topping Mount St. Mary's, 2-1, in non-conference action at a thoroughly rain-soaked Belson Stadium.
Matt Forster put forth another tremendous effort for the Red Storm (5-3-1, 1-0-1 BIG EAST), registering the game-winning goal in the 78th minute after assisting on the team's opening tally in the 23rd. Forster is now tied for the league lead in goals with five on the season, while his 13 points are also good enough for tops in the BIG EAST.
Johan Aquilon provided the other goal for St. John's, heading home the first of his collegiate career to give the Johnnies an early lead. Aquilon was one of four Johnnies to register a team-high three shots on the evening.
Tyron Matuta needed to make to just one save to earn his second victory of the season in goal.
After entering the Xavier game early on and putting forth a solid effort in the Red Storm's draw with the Musketeers, freshman Matt Chandler earned his first career start and played 90 minutes on the back line against Mount St. Mary's.
St. John's dominated the Mountaineers (1-5-2) statistically on the evening, registering 19 shots to The Mount's six. Eleven of the Johnnies' 19 tries were on target, while just two of the Mountaineers' six shots found their mark.
Mount St. Mary's recorded the first shot of the evening in the second minute, as Jonathan Godette sent a header on target that was turned aside by Matuta.
From there, St. John's dominated possession, recording the game's next five shots. The fifth shot, the fourth on target, put the Johnnies on the board. The Red Storm earned a free kick just outside the box thanks to a Mount handball, giving Forster a free kick from a dangerously close distance. The junior sent it unimpeded to the top of the six, where Aquilon headed the ball off the keeper, Bobby Edwards, and into the back of the net to put the Red Storm ahead 1-0.
The Mountaineers wasted no time responding, striking less than two minutes later with a goal off the acrobatic foot of Godette. Teammate Andrew Lasso chipped a ball into the box toward Godette, who skied for it, got parallel to the ground and sent it into the top of the cage.
Aquilon recorded two more great chances in the 31st and 33rd minutes, throwing a pair of headers on target that were turned aside by Edwards.
Knotted at one after 45 minutes of play, St. John's continued to dominate possession and pace of play in the opening part of the latter stanza.
Outshooting the Mountaineers 7-2 in the period at this point, Forster stepped over a free kick from about 30 yards out early in the 79th minute. Standing just beyond the top left corner of the box, the junior sent a left-footed strike sailing for the right-side upper 90. The bending try curved past the outstretched hands of Edwards and put the Johnnies ahead by a decisive 2-1 margin.
St. John's returns to BIG EAST action on Saturday, Sept. 29, playing host to Butler at 7 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on ESPN3.
