Goalkeeper becomes the fifth St. John’s player invited to the combine in the last seven years
Following a sensational senior season with the St. John's men's soccer team, Red Storm goalkeeper Lenny Wilson has earned an invitation to the MLS adidas Player Combine beginning this weekend in Orlando.
Â
Wilson becomes the latest in a long line of St. John's soccer greats to earn a look from the United States' top professional league. The Aberdeen, Scotland, native is now the 14th member of the Red Storm to earn an invitation since the combine was established in 2003. Wilson also becomes the fifth St. John's men's soccer player invited the combine in the last seven seasons. This marks the second-straight year that a Red Storm standout has been called to showcase their talents alongside some of the world's top prospects, as Harry Cooksley garnered a selection to the combine in 2018.
Â
Before 2003, nine St. John's players were also invited to the Umbro Select All-Star Classic, a past equivalent to the modern combine, between 1997-2002.
Â
Wilson, a transfer from Hartwick College, played and started in 13 games for the Johnnies this past season, turning in a record of 5-5-3 with four shutouts. On the year, Wilson registered a 1.16 goals against average to go along with a .781 save percentage. Wilson's save percentage rose even higher in conference play, as he stopped 80.3 percent of his opponents' shots on goal during a 3-3-3 league slate that saw the Red Storm earn its second-straight BIG EAST Championship berth.
Â
A two-time BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week, Wilson ranked second in the league in saves per game and fourth in save percentage on the season. During conference play, Wilson led the BIG EAST with 49 total saves in nine appearances.
Â
Wilson came up big when it mattered most for St. John's this year. On a late-season road swing with his team in need of points in the BIG EAST standings, Wilson made eight saves in a 1-1 draw against Villanova before stopping all seven shots he faced in a thrilling 1-0 victory over No. 24 Georgetown in Washington. For his efforts, Wilson garnered National Player of the Week honors from United Soccer Coaches. It is believed that Wilson became the first Johnnie since 2006 to earn national player of the week accolades.Â
Â
The 2019 MLS SuperDraft will be held on Jan. 11 at Chicago's McCormick Place.
