Former three-year captain passed away Thursday morning in England
QUEENS, N.Y. (June 27, 2019) – The St. John's men's soccer program joins the entire University community in mourning the loss of former team captain Neil Doorley, who passed away this morning in England following a battle with cancer.
Doorley came to Queens from Ireland in 1981 and promptly led the team in scoring during his debut campaign. After sitting out the 1982 campaign with injury, Doorley returned to the pitch in 1983 and began a three-year stretch as the team's captain. In 1985, the first year of regular season play in BIG EAST men's soccer, Doorley led St. John's to a 3-1 conference record and a second-place finish in the South Division, scoring seven goals and earning BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Year honors.
Doorley recorded a pair of hat tricks during his days with the Johnnies and is one of only six players in program history to register three or more goals in a game on two separate occasions.
"He was always jovial, had that quick-witted Irish humor, full of energy but tough as nails on the pitch" said former St. John's teammate Eddie Silva. "He was definitely one of the great pioneers of our program."
Doorley leaves behind a wife and two children.
