Athletic Department reinstates Hall of Fame inductions after five-year hiatus
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's Athletic Department unveiled its plans to resume the Athletics Hall of Fame on Thursday by announcing that the Class of 2020 will be inducted this winter. A 12-member advisory committee, which features former student-athletes and coaches, administrators and supporters, has been formed to initiate the process of selecting the worthy candidates for the 21st induction class in the history of the Hall.
"St. John's Athletics Hall of Fame Weekend is an important priority that we are excited to reestablish as an annual tradition," said Director of Athletics Mike Cragg. "While we continue to work tirelessly to ensure the foundation is set for a bright future it is equally important to celebrate our storied history and champions of the past.
"I very much look forward to bestowing this prestigious recognition on the men and women of this year's class who so proudly represented St. John's while performing at the highest level of their respective sport."
Cragg has appointed Stephen Dombroski, Senior Associate Athletic Director for External Relations, to serve as the chair of the Athletics Hall of Fame committee. The committee will also include St. John's legends Lou Carnesecca and Jack Kaiser, as well as fellow Hall of Famers Sonja Fitts-Walters (Track & Field) and Anthony Zito (Football). Former men's basketball standout Zendon Hamilton and former athletic director Ed Manetta along with fellow alums and long-time supporters Sal Barcia and Kevin Reed will also serve on the advisory committee. In addition, current St. John's athletic administrators Mary Pat Beirne, Jill Christensen and Andrew O'Connell round out the distinguished Hall of Fame committee.
Coinciding with the first Hall of Fame induction ceremony since 2015, the St. John's Athletic Department has also launched a facility initiative to transform space inside Carnesecca Arena that will permanently serve as the Hall of Fame Room. Formerly labeled the President's Room, the event space widely used during basketball season to host Red White Club receptions will be rebranded to pay homage to those individuals enshrined in the Hall.
Established in 1984-85, the St. John's Athletics Hall of Fame consists of 132 members representing the majority of the Red Storm's current sports teams as well as discontinued programs. In addition to former student-athletes and coaches, numerous administrators and honorary members have been inducted into the Hall for their valued contributions and accomplishments during their time associated with St. John's Athletics.
To nominate a candidate for the St. John's Athletics Hall of Fame please email biographical and supporting information to Stephen Dombroski (dombross@stjohns.edu) by October 1, 2019.
