Apple Bank donated $2,500 to fight food insecurity
QUEENS, N.Y. – For the fifth consecutive season, Apple Bank partnered with St. John's men's basketball to benefit a leading New York City non-profit organization, City Harvest.
Through a season-long partnership with St. John's Sports Properties, Apple Bank donated $10 to City Harvest for every 3-point field goal made by the St. John's men's basketball team during the season. The Red Storm finished the regular season with 219 3-pointers, totaling a $2,190 donation to City Harvest. Once again, Apple Bank generously rounded up their donation to $2,500 towards City Harvest.
"This impactful partnership with Apple Bank goes far beyond the basketball court," said , St. John's Sports Properties General Manager Kevin Waters. "3's for the Community has become a recognizable part of our men's basketball games that makes a meaningful difference right here in New York City."
City Harvest is New York City's first and largest food rescue organization, rescuing nutritious, high-quality food that would otherwise go to waste and delivering it for free to hundreds of food pantries, soup kitchens, community partners, and Mobile Markets® across the five boroughs. This year, City Harvest will rescue more than 86 million pounds of food for New Yorkers experiencing food insecurity while also preventing the equivalent of more than 25.4 million kilograms of CO2 from entering the atmosphere. Since its founding in 1982, City Harvest has rescued more than one billion pounds of food and provided it for free to our neighbors in need.
"City Harvest is thrilled to partner with Apple Bank and St. John's Athletics through the 3's for the Community program," said Kenyatta Skyles, Director of Business Partnerships at City Harvest. "Across the city, food, childcare and housing costs remain high, making it even harder for our neighbors to afford the nutritious food their families need to thrive. Thanks to the support of Apple Bank and St. John's Athletics, City Harvest will be able to help feed more than 1,900 families. Together, we are feeding our city—one day, one meal, one New Yorker at a time."
"Apple Bank understands the complex challenges inherent in addressing the issue of food insecurity," said Elaine Dovas, Senior Vice President, CRA Officer for Apple Bank. "Our efforts to respond to this pressing community need are strengthened and enhanced by working with City Harvest, a capable, committed and efficient conduit for directing sustenance to those that are hungry."
For over 160 years, Apple Bank has been committed to improving the quality of life in the communities they serve in the five boroughs of New York City, on Long Island, in Westchester and Rockland Counties, and in New Jersey. The Bank's continual investment in these neighborhoods provides financing that creates resources and opportunities for economically disadvantaged areas and households.
