Red Storm to Provide Student-Athletes with Educational, Networking and Leadership Opportunities in Preparation for Name, Image and Likeness (NIL) Legislation
QUEENS, N.Y. – The St. John's Department of Athletics has launched the UNLIMITED program, which is geared toward providing Red Storm student-athletes educational, networking and leadership opportunities to enhance their personal brand in order to maximize the prospects of legislation surrounding Name, Image and Likeness (NIL). As part of the department's overarching commitment to deliver a well-rounded experience, St. John's UNLIMITED will help ensure student-athletes have the resources to realize their potential on and off the field of play in one of the greatest cities in the world.
"It is extremely exciting to activate St. John's UNLIMITED," said St. John's Director of Athletics Mike Cragg. "We are deeply committed to ensuring the success of our students-athletes and we believe launching this unique program offers them a perfect balance of educational opportunities and practical experience. Ultimately, we strive to remain at the forefront in preparing our student-athletes for name, image and likeness opportunities in the future."
St. John's UNLIMITED is a multi-faceted program that focuses on offering student-athletes the opportunity amplify their brands by developing valuable skills and knowledge in key areas, such as financial literacy, brand management and entrepreneurship. St. John's UNLIMITED will also offer Red Storm student-athletes more opportunities to network with an alumni base of more than 190,000 in Greater New York, the world's undisputed capital of finance, entertainment and commerce.
The cornerstone of the St. John's UNLIMITED program will be a joint partnership between the Department of Athletics, The Peter J. Tobin College of Business and The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies. Beginning in January, St. John's will introduce a minor in sports leadership and branding that will be available to both Red Storm student-athletes and the University's greater undergraduate population. The core curriculum is comprised of courses in financial literacy, strategic leadership in a global environment, digital marketing, sports marketing and media, social media in sport, managing sports careers and entrepreneurship.
"We are excited about our new partnership with St. John's Athletics that will open up the expertise of our talented business faculty," said Norean R. Sharpe, Ph.D., Dean of The Peter J. Tobin College of Business.
"St. John's UNLIMITED will provide student-athletes with the tools they need to succeed in the rapidly changing landscape of college sports, as well as prepare them for their professional lives inside or outside of the sports industry," said Glenn Gerstner, Ed.D., Interim Dean of The Lesley H. and William L. Collins College of Professional Studies. "The CCPS faculty, staff, and administrators are proud to partner with the Peter J. Tobin College of Business and the Department of Athletics on this innovative and timely initiative."
In addition to academic coursework, the St. John's UNLIMITED program also features a department-wide partnership with INFLCR intended to empower Red Storm student-athletes with innovative technologies and educational programming to enhance their personal brands on social media. St. John's became the first college athletics program to foster an all-encompassing, NIL-centric partnership with INFLCR, a leader in social media strategy and athlete brand building. All student-athletes will have access to the platform's NIL Suite, which features tools to help prepare them for a new era on the horizon as it relates to Name, Image and Likeness opportunities. INFLCR's NIL Suite provides custom reporting with digital education and content consulting.
"St. John's is set to be one of the most NIL-prepared institutions in the country, as they're looking ahead and combining both academic and athletic resources to empower their student-athletes," said INFLCR CEO Jim Cavale. "We can't wait to bring INFLCR's tech and expertise to all Red Storm student-athletes, so they can make the most of NIL opportunities coming soon in 2021."
Drawing its potential from The City That Never Sleeps, the innovative spirit of St. John's UNLIMITED will undoubtedly prepare Red Storm student-athletes for their professional careers and will serve as the foundation for long term success. Leveraging all the exposure opportunities afforded to St. John's student-athletes in a city with a population of nearly nine million and an unparalleled media market coupled with access to world renowned businesses and brands makes St. John's UNLIMITED one of the most unique programs in all of college sports.
