Correa earns Her Hoop Stats Honorable Mention
After earning a spot on the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Third Team earlier this week, Leilani Correa added another accolade to her already stunning resume, as the freshman guard earned Her Hoop Stats Honorable Mention.
Â
Her Hoop Stats in conjunction with Mel Greenberg, the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA) women's representative, have collaborated to produce the Fab 15 Freshman. The players were selected from the nation's 32 conference freshmen of the year recipients. Additionally, six rookies who were selected to their conference's all-freshman team earned honorable mentions.
Â
After serving as a spark off the bench for the Red Storm this past season, Correa became the first player in program history to receive the BIG EAST Sixth Woman Award and the first rookie since the realignment of the BIG EAST. In addition to being named the league's top reserve, Correa also earned a unanimous selection to the conference's All-Freshman Team, as well as a spot on the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team.
Â
The Manchester, N.J., native was one of three players boasting double figures with 12.8 points per game, to sit second among rookies in the conference. Correa finished with 10-plus points 18 times, leading the team in scoring on seven different occasions.
Â
The 6-foot guard proved to be a sharp shooter for the Red Storm all year, as she eclipsed the 30-point mark three times, becoming just the second player in program history to turn in three 30-point efforts in a single season. She is the first since Tawana Jackson logged 30-plus points four times in 1995.
Â
Earlier this year, Correa registered a season-high 33 points during the Red Storm's victory over Army, tying the program's freshman record set by Kia Wright in November 2004.
Â
In addition to her stellar scoring ability, the four-time BIG EAST Freshman of the Week averaged 5.1 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game.
Â
Over the final five contests of the 2019-20 season, Correa averaged a team-high 18.8 points per game. Correa led the way for the Johnnies in the conference tournament with 20.0 points per contest.
