Withers Signs with Port Melbourne SC

Former St. John's men's soccer standout Andrew Withers will begin the next stage of his professional career in Australia after signing on with Port Melbourne Soccer Club of the National Premier Leagues.

Withers, a native of Wellington, New Zealand, played for the Red Storm from 2014-17 and spent two years as the Johnnies' starting goalkeeper.

"We're thrilled for Andrew as he takes this great step forward in his professional career," said St. John's Head Coach Dr. Dave Masur. "He's a testament to perseverance and I can't wait to watch his game keep developing."

Most recently, Withers suited up for Eastern Suburbs AFC in the New Zealand Premiership, the top professional league in his home country.

While at St. John's, Withers was instrumental in the resurgence of the Red Storm program. As a redshirt junior in 2017, Withers started all 19 games between the pipes and turned in a record of 9-7-3, including a 5-2-2 mark in BIG EAST play that was good enough for third in the conference standings. He logged eight shutouts on the year, a total that is tied for 10^th on the program's all-time single-season record list. Withers ranked in the top 20 nationally among goalkeepers in both goals against average (0.71- 18^th) and save percentage (.835- 12^th).

Withers took over the starting role in early 2016 as a redshirt sophomore and went on to record a 0.77 goals against average and an .840 save percentage, the latter of which ranked eighth nationally.

Despite being the team's primary goalkeeper for only two seasons, Withers ranks among the top 10 of the St. John's record book in a number of categories. In the long and storied history of St. John's soccer, Withers currently ranks seventh in saves (149), 10^th in goals against average (0.79) and eighth in shutouts (13).
