Partnership will give St. John’s student-athletes the opportunity to improve the lives of children in the community
QUEENS, N.Y. (June 25, 2021) – The St. John's Athletic Department has committed to a two-year partnership with Team IMPACT, an organization that tackles the emotional trauma and social isolation experienced by children facing serious and chronic illnesses.
The partnership focuses on the Vincentian core values of St. John's University and its student-athletes as well as that of Team IMPACT which includes empathy, camaraderie, resilience and excellence. In addition to positively impacting the lives of children, the partnership will grant St. John's student-athletes the opportunity to develop themselves as people in their community.
"We are proud to partner with Team IMPACT and excited to build lasting relationships beyond the field of competition," said Eric Rienecker, St. John's Associate Athletics Director for Student Services. "Team IMPACT's core values align perfectly with our Vincentian mission and will provide opportunities for our student-athletes to grow as a whole person."
In recent years, the Red Storm baseball, men's basketball, lacrosse and women's basketball programs have worked with Team IMPACT and this past June, the BIG EAST announced that the conference itself would work with the organization. As a result, lacrosse player Brody Agres was selected as a Team IMPACT Fellow for the 2021-22 academic year and will serve as a liaison between the organization and the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
As a part of the agreement, St. John's has committed to maintaining or increasing its current level of participation with Team IMPACT. Additionally, the social impact organization will provide exclusive access to the development opportunities for Red Storm student-athletes in areas of diversity and inclusion, advocacy and professional development.
"Team IMPACT is proud to welcome St. John's University as our first formal partner school in New York City," said Ryan Irwin, Team IMPACT's Northeast Executive Director. "St. John's student-athletes, coaches, athletic administrators and entire campus community have embraced our mission from the start and this partnership will further embed Team IMPACT into the fabric of the St. John's experience. We're excited to use this moment as a catalyst to further expand our meaningful work in New York City to enhance the lives of as many children in the community as possible. Working together will allow us to partner with St. John's to share the inspirational stories and life-long bonds their student-athletes create through our program as well as spread awareness to ensure any child who could benefit from Team IMPACT knows about us and has access to our program."
St. John's student-athletes will take their support of Team IMPACT even further in supporting the organization at the BIG EAST and national levels. Additionally, the Red Storm will partner with the organization's marketing team to work on awareness initiatives which may include social media promotion, a series of short videos, or a mutually co-branded apparel sale that features both logos.
About Team IMPACT: We provide outcomes that change lives. For a healthy child, there are a number of systems through their family, school or larger community through which they are able to find support and socialization. For children living with a chronic or life-threatening illness, many of those systems are either unavailable or can have a negative impact. By providing a safe, supportive and encouraging environment for a child and their family to connect with a college athletic team and local campus community, Team IMPACT can fill the void left when traditional support systems are lacking or have negative implications.
