Candice Walker Named “Next Up” Finalist

Associate Head Coach invited to prestigious training among rising college basketball coaches
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – St. John's women's basketball Associate Head Coach and Recruiting Coordinator Candice Walker was named a "Next Up" Coaches Initiative Training finalist on Monday, by the Rising Coaches Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Alliance.
Walker was named to the prestigious list joining the top up-and-coming assistant coaches from across men's and women's college basketball.
In June, Walker was promoted to associate head coach after just one season with the program and boasts 10 years of experience in collegiate coaching. Head Coach Joe Tartamella welcomed the Baltimore native to St. John's in April 2021 in the role of assistant coach and recruiting coordinator. During her first year in 2021-22 she played an integral role in mentoring prolific guards Leilani Correa and Kadaja Bailey.
Prior to arriving in Queens, Walker spent one season at her alma mater Loyola Maryland. Before her stint with the Greyhound, she spent six years at Massachusetts. While with the Minutewomen, the team compiled its first 20-win campaign in over 20 years in 2016-17.
Following the 2019-20 season in Amherst, Walker was named to the Women's College Basketball Coaches Association's Thirty Under 30 list.
The finalists for the "Next Up" Initiative were decided by the 12 member organizations who make up the DEI Alliance each nominated two coaches to represent their groups. Of the nominees, 12 coaches were selected by a DEI committee to participate in the leadership initiative in late October.
